Fig Tree Church Advent

Advent

REMEMBERING THE CHRISTMAS STORY

Each December, many people who have no regular connection to a local Christian community find their thoughts returning - however fleetingly - to the Christmas story.

If you've attended a few Nativity plays, you can probably remember some basic facts surrounding the story of Jesus' birth. You may remember some verses from the Bible which have become familiar readings at Christmas Carol Services.

But what happens after Jesus is born? Who is Jesus? And why, 2000 years after his death, do Christians across the world continue to celebrate his birth?

A SURPRISING RENEWAL OF INTEREST IN CHRISTIANITY

At this time, many people - lots of whom don't attend church regularly - are finding themselves thinking about picking up a Bible and exploring the Christian faith.

Either for the first time, or the first time in a long time.

And if you're one of them - we'd love to extend an invitation.

READ LUKE WITH US THIS ADVENT

If you're thinking about reading the Bible, beginning with one of the four gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John) is a good place to start.

This Advent, some of our community will be reading Luke's gospel, which offers an account of the birth, life, death and resurrection of Jesus.

Luke has 24 chapters - so we'll be starting on 1 December with Chapter 1 and finishing with chapter 24 on Christmas Eve.

If you'd like to read along with us at home, or wherever you are, we'd love to invite you to join us.

REQUEST A COPY OF LUKE'S GOSPEL

If you're someone who likes a paper book you can hold in your hand - we have some free copies of Luke to give away.

Request a copy of Luke

If you would prefer to read the Bible on your phone, there are a range of good free-to-use Bible apps available. We like this one: iPhone Android.

Some of us will arrive late to the party... and if that's you, know that you're in good company Whether you're able to start on 1 December, pick it up half way through Advent, in the second week of December, or read the whole of Luke's gospel on Christmas Eve - you're welcome.
